Description:

A small vulture with unfeathered face and full bristly nape, and a longish, very thin bill. Adult mainly dirty white, with bare yellowish face and black flight feathers. Juvenile blackish-brown with bare grey face. With maturity, tail, body and wing-coverts become whiter and face yellower.


Distribution:

Uncommon summer visitor to the south-western parts of Ghizer and Diamer districts. Prefers extensive open areas mainly in dry or arid regions, but also mountains, open arid areas, towns, villages and rubbish dumps, usually below 2600m.


Behavior:

Spots food during low surveying flight, higher soaring flight or from perch; capable of spotting potential food up to 1 km away. Non-breeders travel up to 80 km daily from roost in search of food. Opportunist scavenger; able to take very varied types of food. Mainly carrion, including all sorts of dead vertebrates, from passerine birds and small mammals to livestock.
